The Executive Director is a year-round, residential role responsible for all River Mountain Retreat (RM) operations on site, and for all guests and employees. The Executive Director has oversight of all aspects of daily operations including budget management; management of the facilities, grounds, and equipment; program development; volunteer, intern and staff development; strategic planning, in cooperation with the RM Leadership Group; personnel administration; and risk management.
The Executive Director reports to the COO / RM Leadership Group.
Qualifications
- 25 years of age or older.
- Four-year degree. Post-graduate degree preferred.
- Three or more years of experience as a leader in a camp or retreat setting. Previous experience as a facilities director preferred.
- Experience in program / curriculum development preferred.

Responsibilities
- Ensure delivery of programs and activities designed for Retreat guests.
- Recruitment, hiring, retention and disciplining of onsite RM employees.
- Provide leadership that ensures the RM mission and values are always in practice.
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for staff, guests, parents, and community partners that embraces diversity.
- Manage / oversee all interactions with guests and guests’ parents.
- Conduct staff training.
- Observe the performance of all staff in their duties, and interactions with the guests in their care.
- Identify and assess risks in RM operations, and respond appropriately -- mitigate and report.
- Serve as a member of the RM leadership team.
- Schedule and foster communication between guests and guides; guides and all other staff; executive director and ownership.
- Implement operational policies, procedures, and standards.
- Help develop and monitor annual budget.
- Serve as liaison for American Camp Association accreditation.
- Function as onsite expert for RM’s online business-management platforms.
- Serve as onsite liaison for any required inspections, including visits from the PA Health Department, PA Occupational Safety Health Association, Department of Labor, Bedford County Sewage, and the PA Department of Environmental Protection (water-systems).
Other Job Duties
- Depending on seasonality, occupancy, staffing levels, and other variables, the Executive Director will participate to varying degrees in RM programming.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salaried position. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
- Year-round onsite housing, for the Executive Director and immediate family, in the private four-bedroom farmhouse on the Black Valley RM campus.
- Full health coverage.
- Two weeks of Paid Time Off, beginning in year one.
- Meals provided, when kitchen is open.
Other Certifications / Requirements
- NOLS (or equivalent) Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification*.
- Current First Aid and CPR Certification - approved / recognized by the State of Pennsylvania*.
- Certified Food Safety Professional and/or ServSafe certification*.
- Relevant adventure-program training and certification.
- Active membership in American Camp Association (ACA).
- Must pass extensive background check.
- Valid driver’s license.
* River Mountain will arrange and pay expenses for these certifications.
