Second Annual Relaxation & Inspiration: A Reading, Yoga & Nature Retreat

Nourish your body, mind, and spirit! Join us for three days of yoga, reading, and nature in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Certified yoga teachers, Brooke Hagerty and Samantha Yingling lead this retreat that is focused on relaxing the body while inspiring the mind and spirit.

Sam and Brooke met in 2022 while in Yoga Teacher Training. Their friendship grew through a love of yoga and nature. Sam’s love of books and reading inspired Brooke to begin reading for fun and not just for education. Brooke’s love of adventure inspired Sam to say yes to to stepping out of her comfort zone.

Our book, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer is a bestselling book that blends scientific botany with the author's Potawatomi heritage to explore humanity's relationship with the natural world, advocating for a reciprocal, grateful, and sustainable connection with the Earth. Kimmerer, a botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, uses essays to show how plants and animals offer gifts and lessons, urging readers to see the world as a web of reciprocity, not just a resource to be exploited.

We encourage you to purchase the book from your local Indie bookstore. If there is not one near you, a web search will help you to find one that will ship the book to you. #thinkglobalbyshoppinglocal

Our yoga practices will reflect the mind, body and spirit connection. Somatic flows, meditation, grounding and gratitude workshops will help you to release and replenish throughout the weekend. Braiding Sweetgrass will be evident in each practice as we encourage you to not only read the book, but to feel the words with movement, breath and sound.

Our schedule provides many options to choose from.

Feel free to partake in any, all or none of them.

This is YOUR weekend, we are here to guide you and again, to offer options.

And yes, we love options!

BROOKE HAGERTY

Brooke Hagerty is a 200-hour certified and registered yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance. Brooke came to yoga after the death of her son and has often referred to yoga as “lifesaving.” Her classes offer up more than the physical practice of yoga; the mental and spiritual aspect are evident as soon as you step into the room. Brooke has received additional certifications in Grief Yoga®, Yin Yoga, Children’s Yoga and Holy Yoga.

In addition to Brooke’s yoga teaching, she is a chef and health coach focusing on movement and nourishment. In her free time, she enjoys golf, hiking, traveling, and spending time on the farm where she is so blessed to live with her husband, Ken, dog, Beaumont and cat, Socks.

Brooke teaches yoga and cooking classes (both private and public) and is an advocate for many local non-profits. For more information on her services and passions please visit her website www.thechick.health

SAM YINGLING

Sam Yingling has been practicing yoga for around 15 years, and has been teaching since June, 2023 after completing her 200 hour teacher training from Studios at Downtown, located in Westminster, MD. As someone who has dealt with anxiety and depression since adolescence, she is passionate about sharing the mental health benefits of yoga practice. She encourages everyone to come to the mat exactly as they are, and provides a judgement free space for a dynamic and fun physical practice. She is also an avid reader, and outdoor lover, and is currently working on obtaining her Sylvothereapy (Forest Bathing) Practitioner Certification. She resides in Taneytown, MD with her husband, two sons, dozens of houseplants, and fish. When she’s not at home she’s probably either teaching yoga, working at a local garden center, or at the baseball field with her kiddos.

Retreat schedule

Wellness with Nature

Resting on 150 acres, River Mountain is bordered by Sweet Root Creek, Warrior Ridge and Tussey Mountain. River Mountain's stunning spaces are designed for reflection, mindfulness, and good vibrations on your self-care journey. Creekside yoga platforms, a restored barn turned wellness space, and the calm of nature make this the ideal destination for peace and wellness.

Located just a few hours from D.C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, in the mountains of Pennsylvania, River Mountain is remote yet easy to access.

History

Warrior Path

Running parallel to River Mountain's eastern ridge is Warriors Path, the great Iroquois Indian highway from Six Nations country, New York, to the Catawba country in the Carolinas. The historic path along Sweet Root Creek was one of the longest and most heavily traveled land routes in eastern North America, connecting Indigenous peoples over hundreds of miles.

The Underground Railroad

Black Valley was an active route along the Underground Railroad. Local histories principally credit four, free black residents with leading the aid network in this area: Rev. John Fidler, Elias Rouse, Joseph Crawley, and James Graham. Just to the south of the River Mountain property are 13 unmarked graves of enslaved people who died traveling the route to freedom.
