Mary Owens, 200RYT

Mary started doing yoga in 2015 on her own at home. Shortly after beginning her journey she tore her ACL… but was able to continue practicing and learning while recovering from that injury and surgery. She learned very quickly that yoga was not only a great way to exercise, but that it had a huge impact on improving her mental health and stress levels as well. She started doing hatha yoga and online classes to get started… and before long was invited to a power class by a friend, and found a style of yoga she loved!
“I loved taking classes, but wanted more… I wanted to learn all I could learn and teach the practice! I completed my first 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training in York at House of Yoga in 2019/2020. In September of 2021, I enrolled in an online 200hr Yoga Teacher training with my friend and teacher, Jessie. And together we completed Awakening Yoga Academy’s 200hr YTT in February 2022. I was honored to join my friend Jessie at the start of her opening her own studio in June of 2022, and have been enjoying teaching at Freebird Yoga studio in Mechanicsburg ever since its beginnings.
I am a teachers assistant in the 200hr YTT programs at Freebird- and have been part of two trainings so far, and I am continuing to learn so much. I love this practice and sharing it with others is one of my dearest passions in life.”

Jessie Davies, 500ERYT

Owner of Freebird Yoga Studio in Mechanicsburg Pa & Creator/Lead Trainer of Freebird Yoga Academy, Jessie began her yoga journey in 2006 after seeking a way to balance her career as a licensed massage therapist and her self care routine. She fell in love immediately. After practicing for a few years she began to dream up what it would look like to share this beautiful practice with others.

Jessie completed her first 200 hour teaching certification with Baptiste affiliates Evolution Power Yoga in 2014. Her love for learning & curiosity for the practice kept her growing! She has since completed an additional 200 hours with both House of Yoga in York city and most recently Patrick Beach & Carling Harps Awakening Yoga Academy based in Seattle. Jessie graduated from her 300hr leadership teacher training with Create Karma of Lancaster, earning her E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance. Prior to opening Freebird Studio she has co-lead multiple 200hr training programs in York and has graduated close to 50 teachers. A student of the practice for over 18 years and teaching for the past 10 Jessie has accumulated thousands of hours both on and off the mat. “This practice has given me so much…to share the magic and possibilities with others is truly my life’s work”

Wellness with Nature

Resting on 150 acres, River Mountain is bordered by Sweet Root Creek, Warrior Ridge and Tussey Mountain. River Mountain's stunning spaces are designed for reflection, mindfulness, and good vibrations on your self-care journey. Creekside yoga platforms, a restored barn turned wellness space, and the calm of nature make this the ideal destination for peace and wellness.

Located just a few hours from D.C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, in the mountains of Pennsylvania, River Mountain is remote yet easy to access.

History

Warrior Path

Running parallel to River Mountain's eastern ridge is Warriors Path, the great Iroquois Indian highway from Six Nations country, New York, to the Catawba country in the Carolinas. The historic path along Sweet Root Creek was one of the longest and most heavily traveled land routes in eastern North America, connecting Indigenous peoples over hundreds of miles.

The Underground Railroad

Black Valley was an active route along the Underground Railroad. Local histories principally credit four, free black residents with leading the aid network in this area: Rev. John Fidler, Elias Rouse, Joseph Crawley, and James Graham. Just to the south of the River Mountain property are 13 unmarked graves of enslaved people who died traveling the route to freedom.
