CARLA HIGGINS

Carla is an experienced yoga practitioner, teacher and Founder of MindBody Yoga + Barre in the rolling hills of Pittsburgh, Pa. Her teaching includes pieces of traditional yoga combined with what she has learned over the years along her own yoga journey. She is a guide for those who want to live authentically and find connection to others. In 2014 she received her 200 hr teacher training from Amazing Yoga and has been teaching around the Pittsburgh area ever since. This year she is looking forward to co-leading her first retreat at River Mountain and completing her 300 hr YTT with MyVinyasa Practice. In her everyday life you will find her getting out in nature as much as possible, exploring with family, seeing live music, and managing her yoga/wellness studio.

TATUM BOSWELL

Tatum is the founder of Yoga Love Pittsburgh, and an E-RYT 500. She attended her first yoga class almost 20 years ago seeking relief for back pain. After exploring several different types of yoga, she landed on the flowing movement of vinyasa and hasn’t looked back since! With a 200 hour certification in vinyasa flow and 300 hour certification from the Himalayan Institute of Pittsburgh, Tatum’s classes combine fun, smart, and creative sequencing while staying rooted in the history and philosophy of traditional Hatha yoga. She believes this practice can be both modern and authentic, and feels privileged to be able to share it’s teachings with others. Off the mat, Tatum is usually spending time with close family and friends. She has two kids who are super active and love spending time together!

Wellness with Nature

Resting on 150 acres, River Mountain is bordered by Sweet Root Creek, Warrior Ridge and Tussey Mountain. River Mountain's stunning spaces are designed for reflection, mindfulness, and good vibrations on your self-care journey. Creekside yoga platforms, a restored barn turned wellness space, and the calm of nature make this the ideal destination for peace and wellness.

Located just a few hours from D.C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, in the mountains of Pennsylvania, River Mountain is remote yet easy to access.

History

Warrior Path

Running parallel to River Mountain's eastern ridge is Warriors Path, the great Iroquois Indian highway from Six Nations country, New York, to the Catawba country in the Carolinas. The historic path along Sweet Root Creek was one of the longest and most heavily traveled land routes in eastern North America, connecting Indigenous peoples over hundreds of miles.

The Underground Railroad

Black Valley was an active route along the Underground Railroad. Local histories principally credit four, free black residents with leading the aid network in this area: Rev. John Fidler, Elias Rouse, Joseph Crawley, and James Graham. Just to the south of the River Mountain property are 13 unmarked graves of enslaved people who died traveling the route to freedom.
