Kirsten Shabanowitz

Kirsten was introduced to yoga in 2005 while suffering from a knee injury and was empowered to learn that every body can practice yoga. This initial realization shapes the way Kirsten teaches today. She has been practicing yoga consistently since 2014 and felt called to complete her 200-hour teacher training in 2021. She has since become certified as a meditation teacher, a postnatal teacher, a pranayama teacher and completed her 300-hour yoga teacher training in December 2024. Kirsten utilizes this gifted knowledge from the Indus Valley to offer safe and supportive spaces for community and connection to be cultivated both on and off the mat.

By deepening her understanding of this ancient practice, Kirsten’s goal is to not only teach you an asana practice, but also how to apply yoga to your daily life in a way that makes sense for you while honoring the roots of yoga.  Whether we are moving, meditating, breathing, journaling or getting out in nature, it is all a part of yoga and can provide our minds with a sense of calm and clarity through regular practice and awareness. Each practice and practitioner inspires Kirsten to be mindfully present and to maintain a beginner’s mindset, continuously learning and teaching cohesively.

When Kirsten is not teaching yoga in her community with her company Kiss of Yoga LLC, you will find her connecting in nature on hikes with her family and yellow lab or gardening in her backyard. She also loves creating opportunities to empower women to support each other in authentic ways, offering space for healing and connection when it is needed most.

Wellness with Nature

Resting on 150 acres, River Mountain is bordered by Sweet Root Creek, Warrior Ridge and Tussey Mountain. River Mountain's stunning spaces are designed for reflection, mindfulness, and good vibrations on your self-care journey. Creekside yoga platforms, a restored barn turned wellness space, and the calm of nature make this the ideal destination for peace and wellness.

Located just a few hours from D.C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, in the mountains of Pennsylvania, River Mountain is remote yet easy to access.

History

Warrior Path

Running parallel to River Mountain's eastern ridge is Warriors Path, the great Iroquois Indian highway from Six Nations country, New York, to the Catawba country in the Carolinas. The historic path along Sweet Root Creek was one of the longest and most heavily traveled land routes in eastern North America, connecting Indigenous peoples over hundreds of miles.

The Underground Railroad

Black Valley was an active route along the Underground Railroad. Local histories principally credit four, free black residents with leading the aid network in this area: Rev. John Fidler, Elias Rouse, Joseph Crawley, and James Graham. Just to the south of the River Mountain property are 13 unmarked graves of enslaved people who died traveling the route to freedom.
