A Wintering Retreat With Yoga Barn
Winter has a kind of magic that doesn't shout. Birds on bare branches. Long shadows and golden light. Snow crunching underfoot. Your breath visible in the cold air, reminding you: you're alive.
This February, we're saying yes to all of it. We're going to River Mountain to remember what is often neglected—that rest is sacred. That joy lives in the smallest moments: branches against sky, silence between breaths, stories by firelight.
Here's What Awaits You
THE SETTING
River Mountain in winter makes your soul exhale. Trails wind through woods so quiet you can hear your heartbeat. A greenhouse hoards every beam of February sun. A pond cold enough to wake up sleeping parts of you. And fires that crackle exactly the way childhood promised.
THE RHYTHM
Mornings: Vinyasa yoga in the greenhouse, then snowshoeing through silent woods.
Afternoons: 9D breathwork and sound baths that reset something fundamental. Hot tub soaks and cold pond plunges for the brave. Watercolor workshops capturing winter light.
Evenings: Council practice and conversation around crackling fires—the ancient art of truly listening.
Throughout: Beautiful meals, community, yoga, syncing with nature, and extended savasanas that feel like "hello, remember me?"
THE INVITATION
Winter light reveals slowly, showing us exactly what we need to see. Under that patient sun, in the company of trees that have perfected standing still without apology, we ask:
What remains when everything else falls away?
What is the barest truth of who I am?
This is your invitation to receive the practice of wintering. To trust that beneath the frost, life is happening. That roots reach deeper. That the sap still runs. That there is profound work occurring in the hush.
Come winter with us. Come home to yourself.

Meet Your Hosts
Nicole Neiman
Nicole has a passion for fitness, the outdoors, and finding stillness in motion. When she's not teaching at Yoga Barn, you'll find her exploring the world or hiking with her dog Zola—always seeking connection with people and place.
When Nicole first connected to her breath on the mat, she discovered something unexpected: the stillness she found there followed her everywhere else. For her, yoga isn't just about the technique of each pose, it's about experiencing the deeper spirit within every movement.
Nicole believes yoga is for everyone, and she invites you to show up exactly as you are. She creates space for her students to explore deeper within themselves, find gratitude, and build self-love through the power of practice. Her energizing morning flows at River Mountain will wake you up from the inside out.
Carleen Birnes
I'm a mindful outdoor guide, yoga teacher, and professor of nervous system regulation. I believe movement, nature, and real human connection are how we find our way back to ourselves. My vinyasa classes sync breath with motion, letting you drop into meditation while you're moving—your body becomes the prayer, the practice, the path home.
When we step outside and move together with the rhythms of the natural world, our nervous systems recalibrate through entrainment and coregulation. There's something profound that happens when we're truly present with each other—our bodies naturally sync, our breath steadies, something opens. We feel more alive, more held, more like ourselves.
My work weaves the science of regulation with the ancient wisdom of moving in nature and community—an invitation to remember what it feels like to be fully here.
Amanda DiMonda
Amanda is a certified 9D and Transformational Breathwork Facilitator, Level 3 Reiki practitioner, and intuitive guide for those on the path of soulful remembrance. Her work invites you to slow down, listen inward, and breathe your way beneath the noise into the place where your truth has been patiently waiting.
Amanda's sessions blend multidimensional soundscapes, healing energy, and intuitive guidance—creating an experience that feels both otherworldly and deeply human. You might find yourself resting in silence as emotions rise like old songs remembered. There's no pressure to be anything here, just permission to be fully felt.
Amanda holds space where the unseen is honored, the tender is welcome, and the return to self is not rushed but reverently received. She doesn't guide you to escape yourself—she walks with you as you remember, with breath as your compass and presence as your anchor. Her afternoon breathwork journeys at River Mountain will help you drop beneath the surface and find what's been waiting there all along.

Wellness with Nature
Resting on 150 acres, River Mountain is bordered by Sweet Root Creek, Warrior Ridge and Tussey Mountain. River Mountain's stunning spaces are designed for reflection, mindfulness, and good vibrations on your self-care journey. Creekside yoga platforms, a restored barn turned wellness space, and the calm of nature make this the ideal destination for peace and wellness.
Located just a few hours from D.C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, in the mountains of Pennsylvania, River Mountain is remote yet easy to access.
History
Warrior Path
Running parallel to River Mountain's eastern ridge is Warriors Path, the great Iroquois Indian highway from Six Nations country, New York, to the Catawba country in the Carolinas. The historic path along Sweet Root Creek was one of the longest and most heavily traveled land routes in eastern North America, connecting Indigenous peoples over hundreds of miles.
The Underground Railroad
Black Valley was an active route along the Underground Railroad. Local histories principally credit four, free black residents with leading the aid network in this area: Rev. John Fidler, Elias Rouse, Joseph Crawley, and James Graham. Just to the south of the River Mountain property are 13 unmarked graves of enslaved people who died traveling the route to freedom.
