What to Expect

Our guests are typically concerned with a few things: friends, food, required skill level for activities, sleeping arrangements, and phones. So, let’s get right to it...

Friends are awesome! We absolutely accommodate bunkmate, cabin, or group requests to ensure that friends are able to share the River Mountain experience together. At the time of enrollment, please just let us know of these specific requests.

Look forward to delicious meals -- organic and locally sourced, whenever possible. We’ll make sure guests are fueled for the day’s adventures. Between meals, grab snacks and drinks to take along on the next excursion. And if you don’t like a specific food, or have dietary concerns -- let us know in advance. We’ll plan for some delicious alternatives. (Allergy and dietary information will be requested during the reservation process, prior to arrival. And always feel free to call us with any additional questions or concerns.)

River Mountain activities are designed for all abilities and skill levels. Whether you’re the next great or a never-have-I-ever, our professionally trained staff will be there to assist you at every step (or paddle or pedal).

Cabin sleeping arrangements are organized based on age group and gender. Restrooms and showers are located inside each cabin with towels, linens, and common toiletries provided by River Mountain.

Phones, tablets, watches, and other tech devices are not allowed during the retreat. We will check your phone and other tech in during registration, securely store and charge it, and return it to you during check-out. It’s that easy.

Packing List

You won’t need much when it comes to gear and activity specific items - we’ve got some amazing partners that have helped with that. We also provide bed linens, blankets, and towels - so don’t worry about that. In general, you’ll just be packing clothing and any personal items.

Download the retreat specific packing list below to ensure you’re as comfortable as can be during your stay with us.

Health & Safety

The safety of your child is our top priority. River Mountain maintains the highest standards of safety through our facilities, programs and staff training.

All staff working directly with guests hold NOLS Wilderness First Aid Certification (or Wilderness First Responder Certification), and all staff members work with our registered nurse to ensure the medical needs of our guests are met. The sole focus of our full-time nurse is the health, safety and wellbeing of our guests. Any prescription medications brought from home are stored safely, and administered from our dedicated nursing office.

FAQ & Commmon Questions

Age Groups

Guests are divided into two groups: ages 10-12 and ages 13-15. Cabins are divided by these age groups and by gender. Activities are typically co-ed and divided by age as well, but some activities combine all ages and genders.

Group Size

Accommodations are boutique-style, with no more than 10 guests per cabin. Activities are limited to 6-10 guests per guide, depending on the activity. We’ve found this helps forge new friendships and helps guests get as much as possible out of the experience.

Who Attends

Young people from around the country and the globe visit River Mountain. If you wish to attend with a friend, please let us know and we’d be happy to coordinate any cabin and sleeping arrangement requests.

Experiential Learning

We believe in learning by doing. Getting outside, being hands on with nature, and reflecting on experiences are fundamental to the River Mountain program.

For Everyone

We value diversity. River Mountain is a place of respect, acceptance, and tolerance of guests, staff, and the community that surrounds us.
