And We Bid You Goodnight, Sweet George
We plan to come together to celebrate the life and loves of George, to see the world through his Ancient Eyes, listen to good music, share stories, eat the meat down to the bone, and drink in the glories of nature.
From his varied travels, George brought home stories of the wonders of the world that he saw and experienced and lovingly shared those with us. It was his mission in life to be a seeker and scout and return to us with his visions and possibilities. He was not one to sit and wait for others to act on his behalf or follow a path blindly. He walked this world in bare feet, grounded by the Earth and flowing waters, and wanted us to feel the wonders he felt.
George was happiest when he was able to share those wonders with the special people in his life. He encouraged and enticed us all to see and experience. In that spirit, we will be having a weekend filled with the things George held most dear.
River Mountain has so many things to offer - experiences that we have all heard George talk about with enthusiasm:
practicing yoga in a beautiful meadow
soaking in natural hot springs
beekeeping and raw honey sampling
building campfires
savoring farm to table dining
relaxing in a hammock hideaway
stargazing
forest bathing
taking a dip in the pond or wading in the creek
Everything George is there. And when we come together, his family of origin and his family of choice, he can be there in spirit with us to share the joys of nature and kinship.
So, bring your memories, photos, load up your phone with his favorite music, and bring your appetite and love for living all things George. We will be bringing some mementos of his life to share with you – so leave a little extra room in your bag to take home your chosen piece.
We hope you can come for the weekend, arriving on Friday afternoon/evening and departing on Sunday. Saturday will be a full George day with lots of options for you to enjoy the surroundings, followed by an evening celebration around the fire. If your schedule only allows you to come for a day, please let us know and we can make that work.
River Mountain accommodations blend modern amenities, the comforts of home, and the beauty of the outdoors. They have modern yurts and tents as well as incredible shared-space cabins depending on the size of the party. More details will be coming shortly about food options and dietary needs, what to bring, what to pack. But for now, please reserve your spot.

Wellness with Nature
Resting on 150 acres, River Mountain is bordered by Sweet Root Creek, Warrior Ridge and Tussey Mountain. River Mountain's stunning spaces are designed for reflection, mindfulness, and good vibrations. Creekside yoga platforms, a restored barn turned wellness space, and the calm of nature make this the ideal destination for peace and wellness.
Located just a few hours from D.C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, in the mountains of Pennsylvania, River Mountain is remote yet easy to access.
We look forward to coming together to celebrate George!
MAY HIS MEMORY BE ETERNAL
“There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
The path is for your steps alone.
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow…
If I knew the way I would take you home”
Ripple by Grateful Dead, 1970
History
Warrior Path
Running parallel to River Mountain's eastern ridge is Warriors Path, the great Iroquois Indian highway from Six Nations country, New York, to the Catawba country in the Carolinas. The historic path along Sweet Root Creek was one of the longest and most heavily traveled land routes in eastern North America, connecting Indigenous peoples over hundreds of miles.
The Underground Railroad
Black Valley was an active route along the Underground Railroad. Local histories principally credit four, free black residents with leading the aid network in this area: Rev. John Fidler, Elias Rouse, Joseph Crawley, and James Graham. Just to the south of the River Mountain property are 13 unmarked graves of enslaved people who died traveling the route to freedom.
