Pre-Trip Timeline & Communication
Complete your online reservation.
After your reservation is complete, you'll receive an email from a River Mountain Guest Experience Coordinator. This individual will be your point of contact before, during, and after your camp session.
You will receive travel confirmation and reminder emails based on the travel options you select during the registration process. These emails will include Transportation and Packing information. Feel free to respond to these emails with any questions or additional travel requests.
Travel & Transportation
We offer complimentary shuttle service, or you are welcome to bring your child to River Mountain Retreat!
River Mountain Shuttle
Pick-up times are dependent on guest needs and retreat dates, but typically we pick up from the parking lot of your local REI Store. Final travel details are emailed four weeks prior to your retreat date, as well as two days before your session.
If you will be dropping-off and/or picking-up your child at River Mountain, please arrive during the time window indicated in your travel email. If someone other than a parent is dropping-off and/or picking-up, we ask that you submit our permission/release form by email.

FAQs & Common questions
What to Wear
Guest comfort and safety are our top priorities. Please refer to your retreat packing list to ensure your child is properly equipped for the season, activities, and the ever-changing weather!
Does my child need to any previous ‘outdoor’ experience?
No! Just bring a willingness to adventure, meet new people, and have fun!
Who else will be attending the retreat?
Students join us from all over the country and around the world. Activity groups are small and typically co-ed, but divided by age (ages 10-12 and 13-15). Each day’s adventures, experiences, and meals are typically with the same small group.
Can my child request a cabin assignment with a friend or family member?
Yes! If guests submit a request to bunk together, we make every effort to honor that request (adhering to our guidelines on age and gender). We welcome friends attending and bunking together.
Does River Mountain do my child’s laundry?
We recommend packing for the number of days reserved to ensure all guests have clean clothes. But on week-long retreats, we will help with guest laundry on site. Laundry is typically done on Day 4 or Day 5.
Should I send linens or towels with my child?
No. We provide freshly laundered bed linens and bath towels for our guests.
Can my child be in possession of a cell phone or other device during the retreat?
Cell phones are checked-in during arrival, and we put them safely away (on chargers, typically) until it’s time for departure. Guests can access devices in the event of an emergency.
We’re always available if you need us, and we'll have all of your contact information in case we need to reach you.
What is your cancellation policy?

Are there any hotels in the area where parents can stay?
You’re in luck! The Omni Bedford Springs, a historical resort and spa, is nearby, as is Rocky Gap Casino and Resort. There a host of smaller hotels north of us in the charming town of Bedford, PA, as well as to the south of us in Cumberland, MD. We’re also happy to offer suggestions about attractions in the area.
We believe it’s important for kids to strengthen their independence while with us, so we do not encourage daily communication between parents and kids. If there's an emergency or the need to communicate, guests may use our office phones.
Parents may reach us any time, 24 hours a day, every day your child is in our care.
Email & Text Message
We send regular updates via email and text message to keep you informed about your child’s experience with us. Look for photos, adventure updates, and transportation information during your child’s stay with us.
We love photos of our guests having fun, experiencing the outdoors, and trying new adventures! We will be taking plenty of photos during the retreat which will be emailed and texted to you for download, share, or print.
Medical & Safety
Our on-site staff includes a full-time Registered Nurse responsible for the administration of prescription medications and the assessment and treatment of minor injuries in our dedicated medical station. Additionally, key staff are NOLS Certified in Wilderness First Aid or certified as NOLS Wilderness First Responders.
Parents will be notified by telephone in the event of any medical issue requiring more than basic first aid.
Your child will be leaving with a 21-day River Mountain guide book. We encourage parents to ask about its content -- and ask that you give your children a reminder to check it each day. When the 21-days are complete, guests can re-order follow-up guides.
